Question
QUESTION: I recently quit smoking cigarettes thougt about smoking cigars not any fancy ones just like black and milds don't plan on inhaling are they gonna be harmful and do they contain nicotine

ANSWER: Hi Justin,

Cigars do contain nicotine but if you don't inhale the cigar smoke, they are not as harmful as cigarettes.  Any tobacco product can be harmful if you smoke too much of it so if you decide to smoke cigars, please smoke in moderation.  (A single cigarette usually contains about 1mg of nicotine.  A large cigar however, can contain as much as 400mg of nicotine.)

Hopes this answers your question.  If you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I will be happy to help.

QUESTION: Thank you.your answer was very helpful.since cigars have nicotine and if I don't inhale is my mouth going to absorb the nicotine in otherwords will they take the urge away

Answer
Hi Justin,

It's hard to say because everybody reacts differently to cigars.  Most people that do not inhale cigar smoke are not chemically addicted to cigars and do not have an urge to chain smoke them.  If you don't inhale the cigar smoke, I would say you should fall into that category as well.  What you should do is try a small and mild cigar and see if it has the same effect on you as cigarettes.

For more info on nicotine in cigars, take a look at this article regarding nicotine and "cigar sickness":

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
