Question
Hallo James,
I have heard on occasion that some afecionados leave their cigars in their original plastic or box packaging inside the humidor. Wouldn't it be wise to have all cigars unpackaged in the humidor? Please, advise.
Merry Christmas

Answer
Hi Thomas, Merry Christmas!

Whether or not you should remove the plastic wrappers, cigar tubes or box packaging is purely optional and entirely up to you.  Plastic wrappers and most cigar tubes are not 100% airtight so you can leave them on your cigars and your cigars will still receive the necessary humidity that they require.  I personally like to leave the original plastic wrappers and cigar tubes on the cigars because it provides an extra bit of protection for the cigars against cigar mold.  If for example, cigar mold is present on a cigar enclosed in a cigar tube or plastic wrapper, the mold will not be able to spread onto other cigars because it is contained by the tube or plastic wrapper.  Also, if cigar mold grows over a plastic wrapped cigar, the cigar will be protected by the plastic wrap and not come in contact with the mold.

If you decide to keep your cigars in their original plastic wrappers or cigar tubes but feel the cigars are slightly dry, you can always untuck the open end of the plastic wrapper or loosen the cigar tube cap and this will improve humidity aeration.

Hopes this answers your question.  As always, if you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I will be happy to help.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
