Cigars/Building a humidor

Question
My brother is going to be my bestman in my wedding and wanted to build him a humidor. I knew that they were constructed of cedar so i went down to lowes and bought some, then reading from this website and others, i learned that American red cedar is not very favorable. Is it completely horrible to make it from red cedar? if so could i build the box out of the cedar ive bought then line it with mahogany or Spanish cedar?

Answer
Hi Nick,

Yes, when building a humidor, never use American Red cedar.  American Red cedar is actually more pungent in aroma, so pungent that the cedar's strong scent can actually compromise and fuse with the natural scent and aroma of all the cigars in your humidor.  As a result, all the cigars in the humidor will permanently smell and taste like cedar.  :(  Spanish cedar is much less pungent in aroma which is why it is commonly used in humidors.  It's better to build the humidor exterior with mahogany and then line the interior with Spanish cedar.

American Red cedar is perfectly fine to be used in or around your home such as lining closets or outdoor building projects but it should never be used in a humidor.

Hope this answers your question. If you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I will be happy to help.

Regards,
James

P.S. - Congratulations on your wedding!

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
