Question
Bill, my humidor (a Madelaine Monet) requests that I use only PG in my humidifier not a 50/50 solution.  I have read a lot online that 50/50 is preferred.  Should I ignore factory recommendations and use 50/50 or stick with the 100% PG I have in there now.  Besides, won't it take a year or so for the PG to be used up anyhow?  Isn't the point of using exclusively 100% PG to guarantee no mold and 70% RH?

I have some very nice cigars and am on my 2nd humidor and want to make sure I do it "right" this time around.

Thanks for your insight.

Answer
Nick,

I don't like the 50/50 solution because I have seen it cause mold in the past. I'd stick with Madelaine or Xikar brand PG solution - I have great success with them.

Your comment about the PG solution lasting a year is incorrect though. You'll need to watch your hygrometer and fill your humidifier when the relative humidity starts going down - typically about once a month you'll need to re-fill the humidifier.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have questions.

Expertise

I'm a fourth generation cigar maker and have spent 25+ years operating our factory as well as a mail order cigar company. I belong to cigar manufacturers associations as well as retail cigar associations so I'm usually up to date with current events relating to cigars. I've smoked the majority of brands on the market and would be happy to share my opinions of them with you. Since I live in the U.S. I have very little experience with Cuban cigars, but other than that I know a least a little bit about almost every brand of cigars on the market.

Experience

In addition to growing up in and now managing our cigar factory for 25+ years, I've spent time in many factories in Honduras, Nicaragua, The Dominican Republic and Mexico. BR>
