Question
Hi,I have a humidor with approximately 45 cigars in it. I have built a bar in my basement and want to keep my cigars at the bar but when I put my humidor there the temp in the humidor drops to 61-62 degrees and around 62 humidity. I'm using a Paradigm humidifier and digital hygrometer,I also have a water  pillow. Also what do you consider one of the better Cubans available today? I kind of lean to the Cuaba's, I had my first one visiting England sitting in a pub with a pint of ale.

Answer
Hi Jack,

You may want to consider using an electronic humidifier in your humidor such as a Cigar Oasis (www.cigaroasis.com) that allows you to custom set the humidity level.  With an electronic unit, it's easier to maintain a proper humidity level in areas in your home that is usually hard to maintain such as a basement or wine cellar.  Also, basements are typically cooler than the rest of the house (especially during winter) so you should increase the temperature in your basement and this will naturally increase the temperature in your humidor.

As for Cuban cigars, Montecristo and Partagas are still two of the best Cuban brands in the market today.  Try Montecristo #2 and #4 and Partagas Serie D. 4, 898 and Serie P.  Cuaba is a fantastic brand and the Salomones is the best cigar from that brand.  Hoyo de Monterrey, Bolivar and Vegas Robaina are also excellent brands.  Try Hoyo's double corona and Epicure #2, Bolivar Belicoso Finos and Bonitas and Vegas Robaina Unicos and Don Alejandro.

Also, you may want to try some of the limited "Edicion Limitada" cigars that are produced every year.  Every year a few select Cuban brands release a special cigar as part of the annual Edicion Limitada line.  These cigars vary in size and are different every year so if you like one specific cigar, be sure to stock up because they'll be discontinued the next year.  For more info on Edicion Limitada, go to www.habanos.com.

Hopes this helps.  If you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I will be happy to help.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
