Cigars/humidity in humidor

Question
The temperature in my area is roughly 79 degrees F (22 degrees C). After seasoning my humidor for three days, I began using it and the hygrometer reading went from 72-62. It has maintained this humidity for almost a week now. Is this good or bad?

Answer
Tyre,

You are measuring relative humidity, that is humidity relative to temperature. For cigar storage, you start with a baseline of 70 degrees Fahrenheit and 70% relative Humidity (RH). For every degree your temperature is above 70, you reduce your desired RH by 1%. Therefore, at 79 degrees you want about 61% RH. Sounds like you are right on track.

If you'd like more detailed information send me your email address and I'll send you a 2 page document on humidors and humidity control.

Thanks,
Bill

Expertise

I'm a fourth generation cigar maker and have spent 25+ years operating our factory as well as a mail order cigar company. I belong to cigar manufacturers associations as well as retail cigar associations so I'm usually up to date with current events relating to cigars. I've smoked the majority of brands on the market and would be happy to share my opinions of them with you. Since I live in the U.S. I have very little experience with Cuban cigars, but other than that I know a least a little bit about almost every brand of cigars on the market.

Experience

In addition to growing up in and now managing our cigar factory for 25+ years, I've spent time in many factories in Honduras, Nicaragua, The Dominican Republic and Mexico. BR>
