Cigars/storage of cigars in sealed cigar box in humidor

Question
Bill,

I recently acquired 3 boxes of Cohiba cigars, 10 to a box. I opened one box and placed it next to the two sealed boxes in my humidor.  I would like to save the two sealed boxes - unopened for a special occasion and would not prefer to break the factory green seal.  Will the cigars age properly within the humidor even though the lid is still factory closed?  The open box had a very thin piece of wood on top of the cigars.  The cigars lay underneath this piece of wood and are bundled in a single gold ribbon band.  Thank you so much for your advise.   Ken

Answer
Ken,

Storing the cigars inside the sealed boxes will be fine. They will maintain humidity and should be in good shape when you are ready to smoke them. The cigars are in cellophane tubes, and cello is a semi-porous material. Just as cellophane allows moisture to escape from the cigars, it also allows moisture to penetrate to the cigars, so as long as you have them in your humidor they will equalize and maintain humidity at the level your humidor provides.

Hope this helps.
Bill

Expertise

I'm a fourth generation cigar maker and have spent 25+ years operating our factory as well as a mail order cigar company. I belong to cigar manufacturers associations as well as retail cigar associations so I'm usually up to date with current events relating to cigars. I've smoked the majority of brands on the market and would be happy to share my opinions of them with you. Since I live in the U.S. I have very little experience with Cuban cigars, but other than that I know a least a little bit about almost every brand of cigars on the market.

Experience

In addition to growing up in and now managing our cigar factory for 25+ years, I've spent time in many factories in Honduras, Nicaragua, The Dominican Republic and Mexico. BR>
