Question
When purchasing a already seasoned Humidor, will the pre-season process hold during shipping? Are is paying for this a waste of money?

Answer
Hi Pamela,

In my opinion, it's not worth paying extra money for a humidor just because it is pre-seasoned. The problem with pre-seasoned humidors is that we have no idea how long a pre-seasoned humidor has been sitting in a warehouse or on a cigar store shelf before we purchase it.  By the time we purchase and receive the humidor, it will most likely need to be re-seasoned again.

Some retailers/manufacturers will season their humidors before they ship them and that's the best option. If however, a retailer is charging you extra money for a humidor just because it is pre-seasoned, don't buy it.  Most humidors are pre-seasoned by the manufacturer or retailer at little or no extra cost.

If you are ordering a pre-seasoned humidor from a retailer or directly from the manufacturer, inquire with them as to when the humidor was seasoned or if it's possible to have the humidor seasoned right before it is shipped to you.  To answer your question, recently pre-seasoned humidors will hold humidity during shipping.

Seasoning a humidor yourself is also a simple process that requires a few items that you may already have in your home so if you choose to purchase an unseasoned humidor, you can easily season it yourself.

Hope this answers your question. If you have any more questions or need step-by-step seasoning instructions, please feel free to just ask and I will be happy to help.

James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
