Cigars/Smoking a cigar twice

Question
My buddy gave me a Cuban Cohiba the other day.  I was smoking it in a bar and was told that cigars were only allowed outside.  I decided to just put it out and cut off the ash.  I put the cigar back in my refrigerator in hopes of being able to smoke the rest later.  My question is once I have smoked part of a cigar can I relight it now and smoke the rest.

Answer
Hi Neal,

The cigar may taste a bit stronger than before but yes, it's perfectly fine to put a cigar out to smoke later.  A previously-smoked cigar can smell pretty pungent so instead of keeping it in your refrigerator, simply place the cigar in either an empty cigar tube or a ziploc bag.  There's no need to refrigerate the cigar and if you plan on smoking it within a few days, there's no need to re-humidify it.

If you own a humidor, the most important thing to remember is to NEVER put any half-smoked cigars in your humidor as the smell will ruin your humidor... as well as your other cigars.  When saving cigars to smoke later, be sure to also thoroughly tap all the loose ash off and cut the cigar foot so that the end is clean and smooth.  If you don't tap all the ash off and cut the end off when storing it, ash can cover the remainder of the cigar and make it unpleasant to smoke.

Hopes this helps. If you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I will be happy to help.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
