About James Yee
Expertise
My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience
I currently have 15 dedicated years of cigar smoking (an average 4 cigars a day) and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.

Cigars - aeration grate

Expert: James Yee - 6/11/2009

Question
Hi Richard,

Thanks for the advice on using an aeration grate to have more uniform humidity in humidor.

Would you recommend the aeration grate shown in link below:

http://cgi.ebay.ca/AERATOR-HUMIDOR-BOTTOM-AERATOR-INSERT-10-1-2-x6-7-8_W0QQitemZ...

If you use this item will it negate the need to ever manually move the cigars.  Also, can I use a second grate to elevate the middle layers.  Thanks.

Dave.

Answer
Hi Dave,

Yes, that's a proper aeration platform for your humidor.  Before ordering, be sure that it fits the dimensions of your humidor.  For middle layers, your humidor should have a tray that is already slotted for aeration so it won't be necessary to purchase a second aeration platform.  If you humidor doesn't have a tray, you can definitely modify an aeration platform to function as a tray for the middle level(s) of your humidor.

Using an aeration platform will not fully eliminate the need to rotate your cigars but it will allow you to rotate them less frequently.  Even with an aeration platform, it's still recommended that you ocassionally rotate your cigars and examine them to make sure that they're OK.

Hopes this helps.  As always, if you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I will be happy to help.

Regards,
James
