Question
hey james!
well i have a slight problem with my humidity levels. its currently sitting at about 73, and i prefereably want it at 67 - 70%. i am currently employing one madelaine crystal humidifier.  basically, my questions are as follows.  what do you know about boveda packs? would you reccommend them, and should i use them INSTEAD of my humidifier? also, would they work well with the madelaine humidifier if i chose to use them together? thanks a lot for the help,

JP

Answer
Hi JP,

Boveda packs are excellent.  They're fairly inexpensive and they work perfectly.  They're available in 65%, 69%, 72% & 75% (they also have a 84% seasoning pack) so if prefer your humidity to be 67-70%, you can use the 69% pack.  You can also use them together with your madelaine humidifier (or any humidifier).  Boveda packs are meant to last about 2 months but if you use them in tandem with a humdifier, they can actually re-absorb humidity and last longer than 2 months.  I have Boveda packs and Humidi-paks in my humidor that are still working flawlessly after 3+ years! (When they are dried out, they become flat and you can feel the crystals inside the pack.  If you let the dried-out packs sit in your humidor, they actually swell and refill with moisture!)

Hopes this answers your question.  As always, if you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I will be happy to help.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
