About James Yee
Expertise
My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience
I currently have 15 dedicated years of cigar smoking (an average 4 cigars a day) and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.

Cigars - Opus X and glass jar humidors

Expert: James Yee - 7/3/2009

Question
Silly question maybe, but is it Opus X as in the letter X or as in Roman numeral 10? Also, what is your opinion on using high quality, tight sealing mason type glass jars as humidors? I make sure to open the jars at least weekly, include a piece of cedar to absorb any excess moisture, and use a gel humidifier. I have not experienced any problems with this method of humidification as of yet and have been using it for at least a year now. Cigars are never dry or overly moist, they have been just right actually. I have two decent quality traditional wood humidors that I never had good luck with maintaining proper humidification.

Answer
Hi Rodney,

The "X" in "Opus X" actually refers to the roman numeral as it took 10 years for Carlos Fuente Jr. to create the famous cigar brand.

In regards to mason jar-style humidors, they do work and I think they're a great alternative to traditional humidors but you need to be very careful maintaining them as the biggest problem for many of these humidor jars is that they're usually airtight and contain little or no Spanish cedar at all.  Aside from this, humidor jars are fantastic because they are affordable, can create a proper humidity level when properly maintained and cigars stored in them are usually in perfect condition.

Hopes this answers your question.  As always, if you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I will be happy to help.

Regards,
James
