Cigars/fake cigars

Question
A friend (non-smoker, but with a wide Latin American network) recently gave me a container containing 22 Cohiba Double Coronas cigars. The container is very special: a "humidor" in the shape of an ice bucket, in the typical Cohiba yellow color, with a Cohiba logo. I have never seen anything like it, and I wonder whether this is a new sales pitch from the Cuban side, or just something invented elsewhere. Ever seen anything like it? In any case, the cigars -- real or fake -- are exceptionally good, so the gift was highly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Ari,

To my knowledge, the only Cohiba cigars packaged in a humidor jar are the 30th Anniversary and Millennium Reserve Cohibas and both cigars are not double coronas.  The 30th Anniversary Cohiba is a lonsdale and the Millennium Reserve is a Pirámide.

It's possible this particular item was produced for the Latin American market but I've never seen or heard of anything like this.  The last Cohiba double corona to be produced was the 2003 Edición Limitada and that cigar was not packaged in a humidor jar.

You can find more info about Cohiba and the limited edition humidors (and jars) here:
http://www.cubancigarwebsite.com/brand.aspx?brand=Cohiba

You can also find more info about limited edition releases and commemorative Cuban cigars and humidors here:

Hopes this helps.  If you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I will be happy to help.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
