Question
Hi James,

I recently was given a box of 10 siglo VI (cuban).  The box checks out as legit and so do the bands, but my concern is with the cigars themselves.

The construction is very good, the only problem I have with them is the cap.  Its not a prominent triple cap.  Is this normal for a cohiba siglo VI?  I tried looking online but can't find a good picture of a Siglo VI cap.  Looks almost like a double cap.  But a lot of the pics online looks similar.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,

Charles

Answer
Hi Charles,

The triple cap should be fairly noticeable.  You should see three separate lines which indicate the seam lines of the cap's "tail" wrapped around the head of the cigar.  If you see only two lines, it's definitely a double cap.  Try smoking the cigar and see if it tastes like a genuine Cohiba.  You can also try unraveling the cap to see if the cap tail is definitely a triple cap or not.

Even though the box and bands may be genuine, it's possible for counterfeiters to steal/recycle genuine packaging for their cigars.  I can't say for sure whether or not your Siglo VIs are fake or real but you should be able to tell just by smoking one.

Hopes this helps.  If you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I will be happy to help.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
