Cigars/nauseous... for days

Question
Hi James,

I saw your answer from last year regarding getting nauseous while smoking a cigar.  I am a novice, and broke about every one of the rules you mentioned.  The consequence:  I am been nauseous for about three days now.  It comes and goes, and I am dealing with it... but wonder what is going on.  It does not really seem to be getting any better, and am getting a bit tired of it.  Have you ever heard of anything like this?  Maybe not even related to the cigar.. but certainly seems suspicious.

Thanks

Doug

Answer
Hi Doug,

Cigar sickness has been known to affect people for several days.  The level of nausea really varies from smoker to smoker.  For some people, it can last a couple of hours and for others, they may feel nauseous for 4 or 5 days.  The only thing you can really do is rest as much as you can now and the nausea should eventually pass.  Try not to over-exert yourself physically and eat as light as possible.

Cigar sickness can be prolonged just by the heavy smell of cigar smoke so if you smoked in your home and it still smells of smoke, open the windows to air the rooms out.  Sleeping with the windows open can also help as a refreshing breeze can keep your mind off the nausea.

If you continue to feel nauseous for the next 2 days, you may want to see your doctor and he may be able to prescribe something for the nausea.  The usual cure however, is to just wait it out.

I hope this helps.  If you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I will be happy to help.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
