Question
Hello, can you keep 10 or 20 cigars in a humidor made for 100 ?,I was told by a cigar shop salesperson that you needed to have half a humidors capacity or more for it to work correctly,thanks..Jon.

Answer
Hi Jon,

Keeping 10 or 20 cigars in a 100-count humidor is perfectly fine as long as the humidity level is properly maintained.  For the humidification device, it would be best to use an electronic humidor humidifier (such as a Cigar Oasis unit) that can automatically maintain the humidity at 70% rather than using a passive humidifier (such as a foam or bead-based unit).  With an electronic humidifier, the unit will automatically shut off the humidity output whenever a certain humidity level is reached (ie: 70%) inside the humidor and this will prevent your humidor from producing too much humidity.  Passive humidifiers designed for 100-count humidors may generate too much humidity for 10-20 cigars and this could cause damage to your cigars.

If you decide to use a passive humidifier, it would be ideal to eventually add more cigars to your humidor.  If you prefer to only keep 10-20 cigars, you may want to downgrade to a 50 or 75-count humidor.

I hope this helps!  If you have any more questions, please feel to just ask and I will be happy to help.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
