Cigars/Cigar cleaning

Question
Well, I just purchased a large humidor.  In the process of moving it, we got the inside of the glass dirty and smudgy (it's a word).  Is there a right or a wrong way to clean the inside of the glass?  I didn't know if Windex or something to that effect would damage my cigars, or would it make my smokes taste like ammonia?

Answer
Hi Drew,

You can use Windex but you must make sure that you don't get any of it on the humidor interior wood.  Spray the windex onto a cloth first and then carefully apply it to the glass.  (To be safe, remove your cigars from the humidor first.)  Once the glass is cleaned, you can then re-wipe it with a cloth lightly moistened with distilled water to dilute the windex (this is optional).  If you do re-wipe the glass with distilled water, immediately use a lint-free cloth to wipe the glass dry.  This will prevent water marks from appearing on the glass.

As an alternative to windex, you can also use environmentally friendly, non-toxic glass cleaners.

To keep the glass free of the occassional fingerprints, scuff or streak marks, just rub them out with a lint-free, microfiber cloth (the same kind you would use to clean sunglasses/eyewear).

Hopes this helps.  If you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I will be happy to help.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
