Question
James,
I have asked many of my "expert" friends as well as some professionals this question and have gotten mixed answers, perhaps you can help:

I have a 125 cigar glass top humidor with one removable tray, I would like to replace the "sponge" humidifier with electric. I am looking at the La Veil or Cigar Oasis (both under $100.00), I am told either will work fine but I am also told that electric units are "overkill" for this size humidor. My purpose for wanting to replace the passive unit is better control and ease of maintenance.

Your thoughts please.

Answer
Hi Ken,

An electronic humidifier for a 125-count humidifier is not overkill.  I know many people that use electronic humidifiers for humidors as small as 100 count and they don't use them to show off or overkill but as you mentioned, they want better control of their [erratic] humidity level with minimal supervision and maintenance.  Electronic humidifiers are always handy when we have fussy humidity levels or want something that will make our cigar maintenance much easier.  Having an electronic humidifier really takes away alot of the stress and time consumption that cigar smokers have with passive humidifier units.

Both La Veil and Cigar Oasis have excellent humidifiers that are ideal for smaller 100-300 count humidors.  La Veil's DCH200 uses a rechargable battery (no wires) and has a slim profile while Cigar Oasis XL has a larger water reservoir.  They're both fairly equal in terms of performance so I would suggest you examine both brands and decide which brand and model would best suit your humidor layout.

Hopes this answers your question.  If you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I will be happy to help.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
