Question
Hi Bill,
My dad passed away recently and he had several boxes of cigars as well as many empty cigar boxes.
We were wondering what the little piece of wood that is in each box is for.  Should we keep this wood in the full boxes?
Thanks so much.

Answer
Sherry,

I'm sorry about the loss of your father, please accept my condolences.

The piece of wood that is included in most cigar boxes serves 2 purposes:

1. Most boxes contain 25 cigars, 1 row of 13 and 1 row of 12. The piece of wood serves as a spacer in the row with 12 cigars.

2. The wood is Spanish cedar, which adds a nice, complimentary aroma to the cigars. It also helps to naturally ward off tobacco bugs which can destroy the cigars, although it only helps in this regard and does not totally prevent the infestation from occurring.

I'd leave the wood in the boxes, and hopefully when you open one once in a while the aroma of cigars and cedar will remind you of your father...

Hope this helps.
Bill

Expertise

I'm a fourth generation cigar maker and have spent 25+ years operating our factory as well as a mail order cigar company. I belong to cigar manufacturers associations as well as retail cigar associations so I'm usually up to date with current events relating to cigars. I've smoked the majority of brands on the market and would be happy to share my opinions of them with you. Since I live in the U.S. I have very little experience with Cuban cigars, but other than that I know a least a little bit about almost every brand of cigars on the market.

Experience

In addition to growing up in and now managing our cigar factory for 25+ years, I've spent time in many factories in Honduras, Nicaragua, The Dominican Republic and Mexico. BR>
