Cigars/Circulating fans

Question
Hello James, I have a humidor that is 19"w x 12"d x 12"h. It has 2 shelves with lots of slots cut out for circulation. On these shelves I have loose cigars. On the bottom of the humidor I have 4-5 boxes. On the top shelf I have a cigar oasis in the middle at the back pointed toward the centre. I have 2 - 12 volt fans that I want to place on the outer edges of the bottom shelf (cutting holes in the shelf to allow air to pass). I am thinking of having one blowing up and one blowing down. I have a variable transformer so I can adjust the speed of the fans. Just trying to minimize cigar rotating and have even humidity throughout. Is this a good placement of the fans, or is there something better I can do? Thanks for your time, again.            Grant.

Answer
Hi Grant,

Your placement of the fans (one pointing up, one pointing down) sounds fine.  The biggest concern I see is the potential heat the fans may generate while on.  I know someone that tried the same method to cool his cigars and his fans actually increased the humidor's temperature by 2 degrees which was more than enough to put his cigars at risk from tobacco beetles.  (I think he was using cheaply-made fans.)

As long as your fans don't burn too hot, your humidor setup sounds fine.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
