Question
In determining the authenticity of Cohiba cigars.
Are the Esplendidos rationed to the stores because of limited quantities?
Can you buy 50 boxes of Esplendidos at the factory or will they not allow you to buy so many? If so how many?
What are the quantities commonly shipped to a habanos stores in Esplendido or Monte #2?

Mike

Answer
Hi Mike,

Neither the Cohiba Esplendido or Montecristo #2 are in limited production so you should be able to buy multiple boxes if the store or factory has that many in stock.  As for quantities shipped to stores, it entirely depends on the store location and how successful they are in selling boxes.  A high-traffic and successful store could have 20-30 boxes of Esplendidos if they have a lot of customers while a smaller shop may only carry 4-5 boxes because Esplendido doesn't sell well there.  The retailer will order a certain number of boxes depending on how well that specific cigar sells.

Limited edition Cuban cigars however, are usually rationed off.  A good example of this are the annual Edicion Limitada cigars.  Because these are produced in limited numbers, cigar stores will usually receive 3-4 boxes of each Edicion Limitada cigar per shipment.  If they sell out, they can always order more but the shipments they receive will be in small quantities.  These is because the cigars are limitedly produced and in high demand.

Hopes this answers your question.  If you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I will be happy to help.

James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
