Question
Does a cigar smoke faster with a smaller ring gauge?  For example, I prefer a 6x60 size cigar, but if I smoke a 6x50 size cigar, will it smoke faster compared to the 6x60?

Hi Ed,

Yes, a thinner ring gauge will cause a cigar to burn faster than a cigar that is the exact same length but has a thicker ring gauge.  Even though the cigars may be the same length, their diameters and overall mass are different and the thinner cigar will smoke faster because the foot of the cigar has a smaller surface area to burn.  The thicker a cigar is, the longer it takes to burn.

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
