Question
What is currently the best cuban cigar? And what are your thoughts on the Cohiba Siglo 1?

Answer
Hi Anthony,

Because taste is subjective, it's hard to say which is the best Cuban cigar.  To me, the Montecristo #2 is probably my all-time favourite cigar but other people may think another Cuban cigar is the best.  A lot of people feel the iconic Cohiba Esplendido is one of the best cigars available.

Here is a list of the most popular, regular production Cuban cigars.  Any of these cigars can easily qualify as the best Cuban cigar:

Cohiba Esplendido*
Cohiba Robusto
Cohiba Siglo VI
Montecristo #2*
Montecristo #4
Montecristo "A"
Bolivar Belicoso Finos
Romeo y Julieta Churchill*
Romeo y Julieta Exhibicion No. 4
Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure #2
Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona
Partagas Serie D No. 4*
Partagas Lusitania
Partagas Churchill
H. Upmann Sir Winston

(*Most popular cigars)

The Cohiba Siglo I is a nice cigar if you don't mind spending the extra money for the brand name.  I'm a big fan of the entire Siglo line and the Siglo I is an excellent cigar for a quick smoke.  There are however, better cigars that are approximately the same size as the Siglo I and far cheaper.  If you like small cigars like the Siglo I, be sure to also try these:

San Cristobal de La Habana El Principe
Partagas Mille Fleur (handmade)
Romeo y Julieta Mille Fleur (handmade)
Bolivar Bonitas (recently discontinued but can still be found)
Fonseca KDT Cadetes

I hope this helps.  If you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I will be happy to help.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
