Question
Hello.
I would like to know how much is the nicotine content in a cuban habanos cigar and after what period of time does the nicotine subsides or decreases over time.

Please reply
Thank you

Answer
Hi Ghon,

Depending on the size of the cigar, the nicotine content in a single cigar can be anywhere between 100-200mg.  Larger and stronger cigars will have more nicotine than smaller cigars so the nicotine content varies.  Darker wrapper leaf cigars such as Maduro or Oscuro will also have more nicotine when compared to lighter wrapper leaves such as Candela and Claro.  This is due to the higher natural oil content created by longer growing and fermentation time spent on darker leaves.

The nicotine content will decrease slowly over the years but will not disappear completely.  It is believed that a cigar will lose 10-25% of its nicotine content after 10 to 15 years through the crystallization of the natural oils in the tobacco.  Typically, cigars will become very mellow and lose almost half of it's natural oils through plume (bloom) after 10-15 years of aging.

I hope this helps!

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
