Question
Hey James! Thanks for the advice on how to store my cigars during a move. The Tupperware worked great and my sticks arrived in great condition ready to smoke.  Although when I asked my question I was anticipating a 2-3 state move, I ended up moving to Italy so now I'm in a position to ask another question. I want to accumulate 150-200 good cubans to take back to the States in 2 years. Now that I have a European address, should I just go on-line to stock'em and store'em or purchase at a Tobacconist?  So far I've snagged some Bolivars and Hoya's in Venice and a few in Munich, but I have a feeling going on-line would be a better approach as I end up smoking one third of the ones I buy this way. Any advice?

Answer
Hi Rich,

It's good to hear from you again and I'm glad to hear your cigars survived the move! :)

I would personally suggest buying cigars locally at a tobacconist rather than buying online.  By buying in person, you'll have a bit more buyer's protection... you can inspect the cigars before you buy and be able to choose a box of cigars that you like.  If you buy online, you usually can't choose between boxes.  For example, I love dark and oily Cuban cigars but when buying online, I can't really choose.  If I order a box of Hoyo de Monterrey double coronas, the online retailer will ship whatever he has.  However, if I buy locally at a tobacconist, I can examine more than one box and choose a box that I really like.

Most online retailers can take requests on what type of cigars you prefer but there's usually no guarantee that they can fulfill your request, or their definition of "dark and oily" may be completely different than our definition.

Also, by buying in person, you can avoid the shipping times or any damage your cigars may possibly sustain from being shipped.  I know there are advantages to buying online but I'm the type that likes to visually inspect cigars before I buy and have the cigars in my hands that day. If you prefer to buy online because it's more convenient for you, go for it.  :)  Whether or not you should buy online is purely personal preference. :)

I hope this helps! As always, if you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I will be happy to help.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
