Cigars/Converted Refrigerated Humidors

Question
QUESTION: Hi James,

I've been searching online about Wine Coolers and Compact Refrigerators being converted into Humidors, and the results seem to be all over the board with regular compressor and thermoelectric coolers. As well it seems to be very hard to find the thermoelectric cooler version in Canada or they are very expensive. I've also found that there are mixed reviews as to use electric humidifier or beads/gel.

I'm wondering if it is a good idea to convert either a compact fridge or wine cooler? and if so what is the best setup for either the compressor or thermoelectric versions here in Canada?

ANSWER: Hi Craig,

Vinotemp (www.vinotemp.com) makes an excellent thermo-electric humidor.  As an alternative, it is possible to retro-fit a wine fridge and turn it to a humidor.  Both compressor and thermo-electric units are fine but you should use a wine fridge that has a variable temperature control.  This will allow you to set the temperature so that it is more suitable for cigars.

To help absorb and regulate humidity, you'll need to line the interior of the fridge with Spanish cedar panels.  Because they have a larger water reservoir, I would recommend using an electric humidfier instead of using beads or gel.  An electric humidifier will also allow you to have a more precise humidity level.

The best method to retro-fitting a wine fridge is to build a 5-sided Spanish cedar box "lining" that slides into the wine fridge (be sure to add cutouts in the wood for wiring and ventilation).  This allows you to easily remove the lining should you need to clean or do maintenance on the wine fridge.  If you install cedar shelving, make sure the shelves/trays are perforated or cut with slats to improve humidity aeration.

I hope this helps!

James

QUESTION: Hi James,

Are there any local shops in Toronto that sell the Vinotemp, searching online has yielded no affordable options, by the time the shipping and duties are paid the price is overwhelming.

Thanks
Craig

Answer
Hi Craig,

I've been told that Costco, Walmart and Sears offers Vinotemp products so you may want to check them out.  Appliance stores that specialize in wine fridges may also carry Vinotemp.  If not, they may be able to place an order for you.  There is also a Vinotemp Canada website but the home page hasn't been updated since 2009.  You may want to send them an email to see if they're still around as they have really great prices.  Their website is: www.vinocool.com

I've always dealt with Vinotemp's US branch so if you don't have luck finding Vinotemp locally, you can always email their customer service and they should be able to refer you to an authorized retailer in Canada.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
