Question
Hi James,

I'm looking a trying some larger gauge cigars, probably a Robusto sized and light to medium strength. As well, I'm looking something for shorter time wise smoke, I only smoke outdoors and the cold is still here. LOL, someone mentioned to me the RyJ Petit Julietas were good and good price. I've been staying with the higher rated cigars around 90 by CA.

What do you recommend for a Robusto and short smoke length Cigar.

Thanks

Answer
Hi Craig,

Here are some excellent large gauge Cuban cigars that you should try.  The Partagas D4 and Hoyo Epi 2 robustos are always good.  Montecristo #4 is fantastic and Romeo y Julieta makes lots of fantastic cigars that are excellent short smokes:

Partagas Serie D No. 4
Partagas Mille Fleur*
Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 2
Hoyo de Monterrey Petit Robusto
Bolivar Royal Coronas
Montecristo No. 4 & No. 5
San Cristobal de La Habana La Fuerza
San Cristobal de La Habana El Principe
Romeo y Julieta Exhibicion No. 4
Romeo y Julieta Cedro De Luxe No. 3
Romeo y Julieta Tubos No. 2 & No. 3
Romyo y Julieta Short Churchill
Romeo y Julieta Mille Fleur*

(*Both brands have petit corona cigars named Mille Fleur)

When buying cigars, be sure to look for dark and oily ones as they are usually richer in flavour plus the abundance of natural oils will give the cigars plenty of plume and even more flavours when aging.

Hope this helps!

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
