Question
Hole in 150
Hole in 150
OK, so I am lucky enough to own a few Partagas 150 Robustos.  The other day i noticed 1 small hole near the foot of the cigar.  I have looked over my other sticks in my collection, over 75+ and have not noticed any other damage, or evidence of holes, or 'beetles', if thats even what the singular hole is from.

I would normally toss out the stick, and replace it...but...it's a 150, and you know how rare and expensive they are.

opinion question, other than the 1 hole, there is no evidence of beetles, I tap the foot, no dust comes out.     Would you smoke it?

Answer
Hi Sean,

Yes, considering the rarity and value of the cigar, I would smoke it.

Any holes in your cigars will cause the cigar to burn irregularly (just temporarily).  The good news is that the hole on your Partagas 150 is near the foot of the cigar so the irregular burn is only at the start of the cigar and the burn will naturally even itself out once the burn passes the hole.  As long as the cigar doesn't have any loose, powdered tobacco falling out of it (or a black powder; aka Tobacco beetle fecal matter), it should be safe to smoke.

Just to be on the safe side, you should still freeze your cigar to kill off any tobacco beetles that could be hiding inside the cigar.

I hope this helps!  If you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I will be happy to help.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
