Cigars/Bad batch

Question
Hi James,
I got a cabinet of 25 Hoyo de Monterrey Flor Extrafina in Dubai a couple of weeks ago and as soon as I returned to Ireland put them into my Humidor. Last weekend I took 3 out for my brothers and we found they were rolled very tight and were flaking peeling. Eventually we gave up as they were hard work and couldn't enjoy the experience.  One of my brothers said I should be able to report this and sent them back to get another batch.  Is this correct and if so who do I contact?  Regards  Paddy

Answer
Hi Paddy,

Whether or not you are able to return the cigars is entirely up to the store so check your purchase receipt or call the store and ask if you are able to return the cigars because they are a bad batch.  In most cases, return is not possible after the cigars have left the store but not all stores enforce this rule so contact the store and inquire about their return policy on defective cigars.

What you should try first is sample another cigar from that box.  If humidor is running perfectly at 70/70 (70 degrees Fahrenheit, 70% humidity) and another cigar is rolled too tightly and is hard to draw, then contact the store.  Sometimes a box may have a few tightly rolled cigars (this can be a common occurrence) but the other cigars in the box may be fine.

Hopes this answers your question. If you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I will be happy to help.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
