Cigars/Excessive Smoke

Question
Hi Bill
I bought a few cigars from a tobacco store the other day (Hoyo De Monterry) and I have run into a bit of a problem with them. Once I get my cigar properly lite the burning end DOES NOT STOP SMOKING. I was told this is "good" but even when I apply as much suction possible the smoke still rises out of the lite end. The situation frustrated me, so I cut another slice into the cigar thinking maybe I didnt cut the cap low enough to get a good draw..the problem persisted. Any advice? I cant really enjoy the smoke because the cigar pretty much smokes itself alway. I understand a little smoke is norm and good, but do you have any advice? Thanks a lot!

Answer
Matthew,
That is unusual, unless the cigar(s) have a leak in them or if they are rolled too tight and aren't really drawing properly. If everything is right, when you draw on the cigar all the air should be drawn through the filler evenly and this would not allow the lit end to smolder while you are drawing. Unfortunately there is no fix for a cigar rolled too tight. I'm curious to know if they draw ok and if you have tried more than one of the cigars you bought.

Expertise

I'm a fourth generation cigar maker and have spent 25+ years operating our factory as well as a mail order cigar company. I belong to cigar manufacturers associations as well as retail cigar associations so I'm usually up to date with current events relating to cigars. I've smoked the majority of brands on the market and would be happy to share my opinions of them with you. Since I live in the U.S. I have very little experience with Cuban cigars, but other than that I know a least a little bit about almost every brand of cigars on the market.

Experience

In addition to growing up in and now managing our cigar factory for 25+ years, I've spent time in many factories in Honduras, Nicaragua, The Dominican Republic and Mexico. BR>
