Cigars/Hygrometer question

Question
I purchases the Madeline Super Thin Digital.  I was wondering if I do in fact switch it on/off everytime I want a reading.  Yes, I understand this will certainly lengthen the battery life.  But are they made just to be left on?  If so how long does the battery last?

If not, are any made with light meter or something to switch on when humidor is opened?

I have been switching mine on and shutting humidor for 5 secs, then re-opening, is this enough for a satisfactory reading?

Thanks cigar newb

Answer
Hi Ron,

Digital hygrometers can indeed be left on continuously.   Even if you leave the hygrometer on, the battery can still last a long time (on average two to three years but can last even longer depending on brand of hygrometer and quality of battery) so there’s no worry that the device will drain a new battery anytime soon.

Technically, it’s also fine to only turn the hygrometer on when you need to but if you check on your humidor daily or several times daily, it’s best to just leave it on.  If you decide to only turn the hygrometer when you need to, be sure to leave the hygrometer on for a few minutes so that it can take a thorough and more accurate reading.

Hopes this answers your question. If you have any more questions, please feel free  to just ask and I’ll be happy to help.

Regards,
James.

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
