Cigars/Plume

Question
My neighbor has asked me to be more considerate with my cigar smoking as the "plume, and foul smelling second hand smoke" has drifted into his yard, at least 75 feet away.
I have been smoking cigars for over 30 years and have never seen any plumes of my smoke.  Would it be possible for my cigars smoke to "plume" for that distance?

Answer
Hi Bob,

Visibility-wise, it is very unlikely that your cigar’s smoke plume would remain intact and drift 75 feet outdoors and billow into your neighbour’s yard.  Even on a calm day with no wind, cigar smoke can visually linger for up to 25 feet (under the right conditions) but because cigar smoke is not thick enough, it typically begins to break up within 15 feet or less.  It’s very unlikely that a cigar smoke plume would remain intact for up 75 feet; especially outdoors  (unless you are smoking a bonfire’s worth of cigars).   However, it is possible that your neighbour can smell the cigar smoke as the aroma of cigar smoke can travel much farther; especially if there’s a breeze.  At 75 feet however, the aroma of the cigar smoke would be subtle, if not very faint.

So, to answer your question: I’m sure your neighbour may be able to faintly smell cigar smoke in his yard but at 75 feet, it certainly wouldn’t be a fog of smoke.  Your neighbour may also be able to see the smoke in your yard (if you smoke outdoors) but the smoke certainly wouldn’t stay intact and travel into his yard as a giant cloud.

Of course, if you’re having a cigar party and have dozens of guests all smoking cigars, that would be a different story…

In either case, it’s still best to be good neighbours and be more considerate of each other.

Hopes this answers your question. If you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I'll be happy to help.

Regards,
James.

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
