Question
i have an end table humidor that I've been filling with boxes of some of my favorite smokes. I've put a Digital Hygrometer in it. my humidity level is staying between 68 and 70 but my temp is getting up and over 72 degrees. my understanding is that the cigar beetles will hatch over 72 degrees. now my question, how can i get and keep my temp down? i sure don't want to throw out any of my cherish smokes. thanks and i hope there is a quick fix.....

Answer
Kelly,
Actually, cigarette beetles (Lasioderma Serricorne) can hatch at temperatures lower than 72 degrees Fahrenheit. I've seen them hatch at 68 degrees and maybe even lower. Since it is not practical to keep your home temperature that cold and your humidor does not have a separate temperature control system, there isn't much you can do. However, nearly all cigars stored by consumers are kept at similar temperatures, usually without any incidence of the bugs hatching. Most manufacturers fumigate their tobacco with Phostoxin - a product that kills the larvae left on tobacco which could later hatch in your cigars. If you are buying cigars made by any of the betters manufacturers your chance of having a problem is minimal. I do suggest that you place a cigarette beetle trap in your humidor and monitor it - this trap will help with early detection of cigarette beetles and will help minimize damage. We have them available for $19.95. Give us a call at 800 221-0638 if you have questions or would like to order one.
Thanks,
BF

Expertise

I'm a fourth generation cigar maker and have spent 25+ years operating our factory as well as a mail order cigar company. I belong to cigar manufacturers associations as well as retail cigar associations so I'm usually up to date with current events relating to cigars. I've smoked the majority of brands on the market and would be happy to share my opinions of them with you. Since I live in the U.S. I have very little experience with Cuban cigars, but other than that I know a least a little bit about almost every brand of cigars on the market.

Experience

In addition to growing up in and now managing our cigar factory for 25+ years, I've spent time in many factories in Honduras, Nicaragua, The Dominican Republic and Mexico. BR>
