Question
I recently went to Cuba and of course I had to pick up some cigars. I don't have a humidor but I've already started on a tuppidor. However I've had trouble getting cedar. In regards to the wood, is there any other kind that will work or does it have to be cedar, and does it have to be specifically "Spanish cedar". Also if I can get the wood, should I glue it down or just set it in loose?

Answer
Hi Jon,

The cedar in your tupperdor must be natural and untreated "Spanish cedar" and not any other type of cedar or wood.  Other types of cedar are extremely pungent and the strong scent can actually ruin your cigars.  The natural scent of Spanish cedar will perfectly compliment your cigars' natural scent and won't overpower them.  Also, cedar is only used in humidors because the natural oils in the wood and the natural scent helps fight off bug infestations such as the tobacco beetle.

If you're having trouble getting Spanish cedar, what you can do is visit your local tobacconist/cigar shop(s) and see if they have scrap cedar sheets available.  Many cigar stores will have excess cedar sheets from their cigar boxes and they are happy to give them away either for free or very little cost.

Because cedar will very slightly expand when exposed to humidity, it's best to set it in the tupperdor loose rather than gluing them in place.

Hope this answers your questions. If you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask.

Regards,
James.

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
