ATHLETIC COACHES organize, instruct, and teach amateur and professional athletes in fundamentals of individual and team sports. Coaches train athletes for competition by holding practice sessions to perform drills and improve the athlete's skills and conditioning. Using their expertise in the sport, coaches instruct the athlete on proper form and technique in the beginning, and later in advanced exercises attempting to maximize the player's potential. They work with groups and individuals to help them reach their highest potential in athletic skill and achievement. Coaches demonstrate and teach athletic skills, strategies, rules of specific sports, and provide generalized fitness training and conditioning programs. They train athletes to perform in physical and competitive environments and motivate them to perform at a higher level.
Along with overseeing athletes as they refine their skills, coaches are also responsible for managing the team during both practice sessions and competitions. They may also select, store, issue, and inventory equipment, materials, and supplies.

During competitions, coaches substitute players for optimum team chemistry and success. In addition, coaches direct team strategy and may call specific plays during competition to surprise or overpower the opponent. To choose the best plays, coaches evaluate or scout the opposing team prior to the competition, allowing them to determine game strategies and practice specific plays.

After competitions and games, athletic coaches evaluate individual and team performance and determine strengths and weaknesses of players, the team, and performers. Coaches scout other teams to obtain new players and observe other teams to learn their strengths and weaknesses. Coaches select players for teams. Athletic coaches may also schedule games, make travel plans, make business arrangements, and give press interviews. Some coaches may teach physical education, health, or other subjects.
