Civil/Commercial Litigation (Lawsuits)/Background checks

Question
Can a Xemployer do a background check on me without telling me long after leaving the company? And can this xemployer turn this over to my current employer?
I live in Atlanta so what ever Georgia law is on this would be great.

Answer
There are many legal ways in which anyone can do certain background checks on anyone. E.g., I use www.accurint.com all the time, totally without that person's knowledge. Doing the check is not the problem because neither you nor I can stop anyone from using the Net to get information. However, the misuse of this information may subject someone, e.g., your former employer, to liability for disseminating this info without your permission. You should consult a local attorney.
