Civil/Commercial Litigation (Lawsuits)/Defamation of character

Question
I have been with this company for 13 years. I have never taken anything from this company. On Monday when I reported to work, I was told (not asked ) that I had taken a roll of paper towels from work the day before. I was outraged, I tried to tell my supervisor that I had not taken anything & she kept insisting that I did.
I was so upset that I told the owners that I was quitting, they told me that they didn't believe her & that they would talk to her. One of them said that I was owed an apology, which I have never recieved. I feel that this was wrong, as long as I have been there I should have been treated better. I want to know if I have grounds for a lawsuit or do I have to put up with this. I feel very insulted that she would accuse me of such a thing. Thank you for your consideration.

Answer
Anyone who has falsely accused you of a crime (i.e., stealing) has committed defamation of character. You have a case. However, in your situation, it appears that your damages are very little. After all, you said the owners didn't believe her. For more information, consult with a local attorney.
