Question
i had designed the shear wall ,but by mistake at site they have casted the shear wall with some vertical bars missing, now i want the 20 dia bar in 300 mm thick rcc wall , hilty , is it possible that 600 mm hilty can be done.if yes pl give specification

Answer
Hi Chandan,

Depending on whether the bars are subjected to tension or compression, there will be different requirements- e.g. for compression bars you need to ensure that the restrain links are also present, and this you cannot do by merely drilling and grouting in the bars.

In theory drilling and grouting is of course possible, but you may find it easier to cut down the wall and insert the bars. Or alternativly, if space allows, you could cast a layer of additional concrete say 100mm thick atound the 300mm wall (after exposing the aggregate and using a bonding agent) and insert additional bars within this- again taking care of lateral restraint requirements.
