Question
I am a student civil engineer from Kenya.
am made to design a piled raft foundation for 4 no. LP Gas  horizontally mounded tanks 6.5m dia. by 100 m long and 6774 tons capacity.hey are supposed to be buried in silty clayey soil of 100kpa bearing capacity. What would be the slab thickness and size and depth of piles (friction type)and their reinforcements.please give the grid spacing of the piles.

Thanks in advance.
Timothy.

Answer
Jambo, Timothy,

If I have interpreted your figures correctly, each tank will weigh around 70,000 kN, so if you try out a base of say 10m width by 110m long by say 1.5m thick, that will weigh around 26,000 kN, making it a total of 96,000 kN. So the applied UDL pressure on the soil will be 96,000 divided by 110x10 = 87 kpa. Therefore you do not need any piles, unless these are require to control overall or differential settlement.

In any case, I regret that without ground investigation information I cannot suggest what pile capacites you could expect.
