Civil Engineering/waffle slab

Question
what's a waffle slab?& how it is constructed?

Answer
Hello Nidhi,

In reference to your question, a waffle slab system is an efficient and better way of constructing slabs for new homes or industrial buildings. This is done by interlocking components which ensure maximum control of every concrete pour. It also allows for greater accuracy of specifications of concrete quantities, reduction of waste and provides a boost to building site efficiency. It has minimal impacts on the environment - less soil disturbance, no excavated rubble from trenches etc. The on-ground slab, with air pockets created by the pods, forms an insulating layer between the structure and ground.

To construct a waffle pod system there are basically 6 steps:

1. Ensure the building site is level - if necessary cut and fill the site until a level surface is obtained. If un-compacted fill is present, refer to an engineer's report for pier details.

2. Lay first fix plumbing and carry out white ant treatment.

3. Set up outside edge boards, and completely cover the area in plastic sheeting, ensuring edges are overlapped and topped.

4. Working from one corner, lay out the interlock pods and brackets in a grid pattern within the formwork, as specified in the footing design.

5. Reinforcement bars simply drop into position on the self-locating brackets between the pods. Lay top mesh, following design specifications and fastening where necessary.

6. Pour the concrete and vibrate well, ensuring intersecting ribs are fully filled, and there is a minimum cover of 25mm over the pods and 20mm over the top mesh (refer to engineer's specifications).

There is a good site which I found which could give you a visual to the construction of this system;

Hope that answers your question.

Expertise

Willing to answer all civil engineering-related questions through the undergraduate level. I will explain unclear concepts and suggest approaches to solving problems, but would prefer not to completely solve homework problems for you. If you are completely stumped on homework/assignment I will do my best to try and guide you in the right direction. Also willing to give advice on issues not related to study although related to civil engineering.

Experience

I have been studying for 5 years in Civil Engineering and have a sound knowledge of various civil engineering subjects. I have also worked as a consultant in the Roads and Highways Department for Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM).

Education/Credentials
Undergraduate Bachelor of Civil Engineering and Diploma in Engineering Practice, University of Technology Sydney, NSW
