what is the bending moment

Hi Emad,

This is very basic- it is the moment caused in a beam (or column or wall), due to external loading or forces. So, for example, in a beam of span 10m that is simply supported, the bending moment at each support is zero and in the middle, for a uniformly loaded beam, will be WL*L/8. So for loading of say 5 kN/m run, the moment at the middle will be 62.5 kNm. (and the shear at each support will be 25 kN)

This moment causes compression at the top and tension at the bottom of the beam- the latter needs to be resisted in an RCC beam by the embedded rebar; otherwise the beam will fail.
