Civil Engineering/Design of Lift Well

Question
Dear Professional,
I want to design a lift well in a three storey hospital building. Size of the well is (7ft. x 7ft.) and storey height is 11ft. Can you guide me for this design as I have no experience for this.

Answer
Hi Mujahid,

This is a very difficult question to answer, as a lot depends on what else is spanning on to the lift shaft, whether the shaft is resisting lateral loads (such as wind and earthquake), etc. However, as a rough guide, for a 3 storey building the lift shaft would normally be made out of 200mm thick RC walls, using 30 Mpa concrete, with vertical rebar of T12 at 200mm centres and horizontal rebar of T10 at 200mmm centers, both layers placed in both faces (inside and outside) of the walls.
