Question
Hello Arshad,
I would like to know is it possible for me to connect steel joist to an existing RCC beam,if so what are the methods available, is there any special consideration to be given for this existing beams. I hope you will clear my clarification and provide a solution.
Thanking you,
Jafeel

Answer
Hi Jafeel,

Yes, you can do that by using a flange/base plate at the end of the steel member and using drilled expansion bolts into the RC beam, avoiding the rebar in the RC beam and also not trying to put any anchorages into just the cover of the rebar in the RC beam (in other words- install the bolts within the depth between the top and bottom rebar of the RC beam. Also try and avoid the vertical shear links in the RC beam.

I presume you will have checked that the existing beam has the capacity to carry the additional load.
