Question
what is the advantage of using dry rubble packing as a foundation will the building fall down if the area surrounding the foundation is washed off. why is that this type preferred over solid foundation using rubble and cement

Answer
Hi Mathew,

Rubble packing is normally used under ground bearing slabs and sometimes under foundations as well, in order to permit compaction of the sub-base and hence allow the applied loading to be more uniformly distributed.

If rubble packing is not contained properly at the perimeter of the building and there is some erosion, then this could result in settlement of the building or slab, and in extreme cases to failure.
