Sir,

Do we need to insist expansion joints in walls or base slab for an RCC Ground water reservoir of internal dimensions of 24m x 24m x 5 m deep with wall thickness of 0.45 m at the bottom and .30m at the top. Base slab thickness is .45m and roof slab thickness of 200mm

Hi Narasinga,

If the design takes care of all stresses caused due to temperature variations, and if you take care during construction (to avoid early-age shrinkage cracking), then there is no need to have any movement joints in a structure of this size. The roof slab will be subject to most temperature variations, so ensure you have adequate additional rebar (especially in the corners), to cater for the temperature stresses.
