Civil Engineering - Final Year project in Kenya

Expert: Arshad Khan - 11/7/2009

Question
Hello Sir,
I am final a year Civil Engineering student in Kenya, and am not sure which project I should choose for final year course. Could you possibly help me out? Am quite interested in transport and environment areas of study. please suggest some topics for me especially those that are relevant to my country. Thank you

Answer
Jambo Eick,

This is not quite my area of expertise, but knowing the problems of urban cities in Kenya (esp Nairobi), I would suggest the following topics for your project:

1. Feasibility/benefits of fly-overs (one or two directional) across the roundabouts on Uhuru Highway, Nairobi.

2. Feasibility/benefits of a Metro light-rail system for Nairobi, serving the outlying areas from Kiambu/Limuru, Ruaraka, Athi River, Ngong, etc.

3. Circular motorway/by-pass around Nairobi- routing to be around towns listed above.

4. A crossing for Likoni channel, Mombasa- tunnel/bridge, etc.

5. Second level of highways (elevated) around Nairobi, similar to ones built in Bangkok and Cairo.

All the above have environmental benefits attached to them, so you could include that aspect as well.

There have been a lot of studies and reports done, so you will have loads of resreach material available, such as:
