Question
I need to determine the minimum allowable wall thickness for the shell and end covers of a Horizontal Steel Overhead Water Tank to be installed on top of  1) 7-storey building (approx. 21M high) with given dimensions as follows: (3.25M dia. x 5.0M); 2) 12-storey building (approx. 36M high) with given dimensions as follows: (3.0M dia. x 8.2M) with middle wall damper

Hi Michael,

I regret that I do not carry out actual designs, for liability reasons-I just give advice.

The best orientation for cylindrical tanks is for their axes to be vertical, then the walls act in hoop tension and can be quite thin (3-6mm, depending on diameter and pressure).

For horizontal tanks, I would suggest you look at those made of panels with stiffners, such as Braithwaite tanks... see below:
