Hi, Arshad,
Actually i m working on the industrial project, so i always come acroos big columns. So i need to ask that if my column size is 1500x2300mm reinforced with 56 nos of 25mm dia bars and column length is 12 mts., then how to design lateral ties. Because as per BS, taking its arrangement of tying all the bars leads me to uneconomy as well there is not much shear force acting on it.

Hi Amit,

You cannot cut corners in this regards, as the ties are not there for shear, but mainly as restaints to the compression vertical rebar so that they do not buckle and also to give the column ductility.

You can reduce the number of bars and the vertical spacing of the links by using a larger diameter of column rebar- T32 instead of T25?
