Question
Mr. Arshad,

Pleas see below my query:

If a 400x400 RCC column is connected to 350x600 deep beams in both planes and building is a single storey with max height of 6m and 200 mm thick roof slab is also there.

1.In view of above information  can we considered this column as a braced column in design.
2.Is block can be consider as a bracing element for column?
3.Please guide me briefly about the basic concept of braced & unbraced conditions for column.

thanks & Regards.
Shah.

Answer
Hi Shahzan,

1. Yes, it can be considered braced against rotation, but not sway unless the whole building is braced by core walls or shear walls or X-bracing.

2. Yes, if the in-fill blockwall is build tightly against the columns and beams, without door or window openings, then this can act as a bracing panel.

3. This info is given in BS8110 or in BS 5950 or other equivalent standards.
