Question
Dear Arshad,
I am designing a footing whick looks like an inverted L-shape. what is the way of designing such a type of foundation and calculating bearing pressures. (so it like having a slab and at one end a downstand beam. the footing sits on soil).

your help is much appreciated

Hi Ayman,

Assuming that the ground at the inside corner of the L remains intact and that the vertical drop of the downstand "beam" is not much more than say 1.5-2 times the depth of the horizontal section of the footing, then you can assume a linear distribution of contact pressure as if the footing had a flush soffit. In other words design it like a standard footing, but additional vertical rebar should be detailed in the vertical section to resist horizontal pressure.
